Throwback Game Recap

Since there are no sports going on right now, I thought I’d post an old game recap of mine. Fall semester, I had the opportunity to go to the press box for two football games and write recaps for them. This is my first, it was Washington State University versus the Northern Colorado Bears.

WSU Cougars break career records in blowout game

Multiple Washington State University players broke records in their game against Northern Colorado. The UNC Bears could not keep up with the Cougs which resulted in a final score of 59-17 at the 2 p.m. game yesterday at Martin Stadium.

WSU sophomore Max Borghi had 34 rushing yards and completed three touchdowns, a career-first for him. Borghi also surpassed Keith Harrington’s record of ninth-most catches by a WSU running back.

WSU freshman linebacker Ron Stone Jr. had his first career sack as well as his first fumble recovery. In the third quarter, Stone was ejected from the game for targeting. Officials said Stone made head-to-head contact with UNC quarterback Jacob Knipp.

Senior wide receiver Brandon Arconado had his first 100-yard game, leading the team with 127 receiving yards and eight complete catches.

“Watching him work his way up from a walk-on to now a scholarship-starting wide receiver and the connection we’ve developed has been great,” said quarterback Anthony Gordon of Arconado.

Gordon completed 31 of his 39 passes totaling 464 passing yards and threw four touchdowns.

The UNC Bears (0-2) played a rush game racking up a total of 216 rushing yards with only 139 passing yards. The Coug defense had a more difficult time than expected trying to stop the UNC offense. UNC senior running back Milo Hall led the team with 120 rushing yards as he did in their previous game against San Jose State. However, the Cougs did force a total of four UNC turnovers throughout the game.

“I thought when we did our job together, we were really good, we did a good job of getting turnovers,” said head coach Mike Leach of the WSU defense.

UNC is expected to finish last in the Big Sky Conference and they have their third away game next weekend against Sacramento State.

WSU (2-0) has a big week coming up as it is their first away game. The WSU Cougars will play the Houston Cougars on Friday at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
